Snowsports Rescue Vehicle: Modular Ski Rescue Vehicle with Dual Function

Snowsports Rescue Vehicle is a final project of James Langton. This project is a modular ski rescue vehicle specializing in head and back injuries with a secondary feature as a delivery vehicle. With a dual function, this enables the vehicle to be in almost constant use and not only operating during the skiing hours of the day. Read his explanations below.

I’ve taken my design influence from downhill skiers with the two large arms influenced by the skiers tucking their poles in-between their body and arms combined with a minimal interior design designed to be used and driven in full ski gear and gloves.

The vehicle has an independent patient module attached to the main body using a 6-axis Stewart platform and an telescopic arm. The Stewart platform stabilizes the patient module as the vehicle moves over tough terrain, ascends or descends therefore reducing the risk of further injury during transit to the first aid stations. Using the telescopic arm the patient module can move into the emergency position so the passenger medic can turn around and has access to the patient in the case of an medical emergency. A thermal curtain isolates the patient module to the primary module keeping the heat in and maintaining a level of privacy.

The interior is designed around a pedaless driving system due to the ski patroller wearing snow or ski boots that would be dangerous to operate pedals in. Therefore ergonomic thumb throttles are positioned on the steering wheel for braking and acceleration. Storage drawers in the left hand side of the rescue module store medical equipment and supplies to be used when recovering and stabilizing
patients on the slope.

Outside of skiing hours, Snowsports Rescue Vehicle can switch to a pre-charged delivery module which will be used to deliver fresh food and supplies to restaurants, hotels and clubs on the piste in the evening and early morning. With the high expense and tailpipe emissions of a rescue helicopter and the high risk of further injury being skied down the mountain on a sledge there is a definite gap in the market for a specialist zero tailpipe emission ski rescue vehicle.

Tik Ka: Asian Reappropriation

Tik Ka (迪嘉) is a Chinese painter & illustrator from Hong Kong who likes to create East meets West pop art fusion illustrations. With issues of Asian representation & appropriation emphasized by the controversial casting of Scarlett Johansson as the lead in the Hollywood live action remake of Ghost in the Shell, I thought I’d post these fun illustrations by Tik Ka, who reimagines symbols of Western pop culture as Chinese icons.  ● Facebook | Twitter
