Crystal Wagner’s new Exhibition “Biotica” Opened 2nd October at 108 Contemporary in Tulsa
Biotica is a hybrid; a space somewhere between the exotic landscapes that populate the surface of the earth and the artificial, synthetic world that people occupy on a daily basis. It is both an immersive pseudo-form grown from reused tablecloth and trash bags and a series of specimens housed in terrariums. With these, both the boxes and the installation, I am interested in continuing to investigate exotic as it relates to things that are strangely familiar but also foreign. The forms, structures, and shapes are all derived from things that are found in nature and like aquariums and terrariums they introduce seemingly alien creatures and plants to our otherwise mundane interiors and feel unfamiliar purely based off our lack of contact/exposure to them. The more submerged people become in their artificial landscapes, both physically and psychologically, the less tactile their understanding of the natural world becomes. Making it more alien, more foreign, and more exotic.
Thank you for the pictures Crystal
