Ye Hongxing was born in 1972 and has become one of the rising stars of the contemporary Chinese art scene. In 1998, she obtained her master’s degree from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Since then she has been exhibited at galleries and museums throughout China, including the Chongqing Art Museum and the Nanjing Museum of Contemporary Art, and has been exhibited internationally in places such as the 7th Annual Exhibition of Sculptures and Installations (Venice), Art Cologne and numerous galleries in Europe and the United States.
Ye Hongxing’s work employs traditional Chinese motifs and modern elements, creating visually sublime scenes that layer oppositions of tranquility and intricate frenzy.
Using the traditionally Western medium of oil paint, she creates alluring self-portraits of her face with eyes closed and a peaceful expression overlaid with colorful currency or bright decorative and winding floral patterns derived from traditional Chinese porcelain. Much of her more recent works prominently feature stickers, a medium that is explicative of the contemporary.
