Solar Powered Fresnel Hydrofoil Trimaran Features Folding Wingsail

Margot Krasojević has submitted her latest design, it’s a solar powered, hydrofoil Fresnel Hydrofoil Trimaran. This trimaran features a folding wingsail to allow better lift-to-drag ratio. The frame of the sail features mechanical structure similar to an airplane wing, constructed from carbon fiber with a retractable Kevlar sail covered in aero-nautical film. The sail has the ability to rotate around the mast and those series of motorized creases help to catch the wind. The wingsail is actuated by motors that control all those movements using solar cells and wind energy.

The multi-hull wingsail design looks like overwhelming, but it actually doesn’t carry a heavy ballast that might slow down the vessel because all materials used are strong yet ultra light. There’s a triangulated woven polyester mesh trampoline with a vinyl coating runs the length of the Trimaran, it is connected to the wingsail that wraps itself into the main composite carbon fibre hull. The frame of this trampoline also functions as a water piercer with a heavy ensuring a smoother ride. The wind flows over wingsail and uplift drives the Trimaran forward.

Harvesting wind energy through Wingsail, the internal gearing systems of this trimaran converts this energy to electricity that can be used to run the motors partially or contribute to the integrated desalination unit along with solar cell/Fresnel clad outriggers. This process provides passengers with up to 4 liters of drinking water per hour. The flexible solar panels at the top and bottom of wingsail surfaces are able to generate electricity from solar energy. During windy days, wingsails rotate to harvest the largest combined energy from wind and sun, while at night, they can just harvest wind energy.

The outrigger hulls are detachable, constructed from a double section vacuum bonded PVC surface lined with Fresnel lenses and holographic film to focus the light intensity towards the sandwiched solar cells. Fresnel Hydrofoil Trimaran features a set of fold-out hydrofoils, when in monohull mode, they can be deployed to push the main hull up above the water, thus, reducing water resistance by up to 80%. In this way, all passengers can allow fast and smooth ride yet with less fuel.

The main cabin is lined with holographic film which diffracts incident light, it also acts as a prismatic concentrator which channels light towards the photovoltaic material. The second stage to the project involves a series of elliptical tracks running across Fresnel Hydrofoil Trimaran’s boards attempting to harness the main hull pendulum motion to run the perpetual retrieving magnetic turbine motor.
