Bee’ah’s Sharjah Headquarters by Zaha Hadid Architects

After the 2013 international competition, Bee’ah has finally commissioned Zaha Hadid Architects to build the new Bee’ah’s Sharjah Headquarters that will rise in the Emirati desert. This Middle East’s leading fully integrated environmental and waste management company has invested in many infrastructures to transform attitudes and behaviors in individual, communities, business, and cities in order to achieve their environmental goals, and this project is one of them.


The new headquarters is hoped to enable this company to manage and deliver further advancements in environmental services such as better and greater operational of Waste Management Center, Material Recovery Facility, Construction & Demolition Waste Recycling Facility, Tyre Recycling Facility that uses eco-friendly cryogenic processes, Compost Plant, and other recycling and material processing facilities.

Since this building will be standing in the desert, the design should respond to its natural environment, providing ultimate comfort for visitors and staff while minimizing the consumption of energy and resource. The intersecting dunes are optimized to overcome Shamal winds, the interiors utilize high quality daylight and views while limiting the quantity of glazing exposed to the harsh sun. The 2 primary dunes are used for public & management section from entrance lobby, auditorium, education center, gallery, and management offices, also the administrative section. These two dunes intersect and are connected through a central courtyard that forms an oasis inside the building, optimizing natural ventilation and maximizing indirect sunlight for spaces within.

Teamed up with Atelier Ten, the building system has been developed to minimize energy required for cooling and water consumption. During milder months, the façade is operable to allow natural ventilation but when conditioning is required, it’ll be optimized for energy conservation through the use of ventilation energy recovery. Any waste heat would be rejected from the chiller into atmosphere where it can be harvested for free pre-heating of domestic hot water supplies. Individual elements of this building structure and skin are standard orthogonal dimensions, giving significant portions to be constructed using materials recovered from local construction and demolition waste streams, minimizing the use for new materials. Bee’ah’s Sharjah Headquarters will be constructed using the same principles which are the foundation of the company’s mission in order to be integrated with its environment and better waste management services.
