Together, BMT Nigel Gee (BMT) and Sigmund Yacht Design have conceived a stunning a design concept to re-develop Royal Navy’s Iconic Aircraft Carrier. HMS Illustrious will be withdrawn from naval service this year. Officially, the UK Ministry of Defence has stated that the ship will be preserved after leaving service and any innovative proposals from private companies or organizations are welcome.
According to James Roy, yach design director at BMT Nigel Gee, it’s really important to preserve this iconic vessel, thus, they have come up with the idea of “Commonwealth Yacht”. It’s a great way to re-purpose the yacht, it will be able to serve all nations of the Commonwealth as a vehicle for promoting trade, attending international events, or doing disaster relief work around the globe.

HMS Illustrious was commissioned in 1982 and it’s been the core of the Royal Navy’s fleet and has seen action both in time of conflict and disaster relief. Recently, it also served delivering humanitarian relief to the Philippines following the shocking Typhoon Haiyan. Illustrious decommissioning follows that Ark Royal in 2011 which unfortunately sent straight for scrap, so this is the last remaining carrier of the Invincible class characterized by the ski-jump flight deck ramp.
In designing the concept, it includes the most identifiable aspects of HMS Illustrious that make this vessel so recognizable. The triple forms placed at the center of the deck come from the sails of clipper ships and they also represent the concept of powerful outline for all to see as well as being functional. So, even though this vessel will no longer be used as Royal Navy’s fleet, its sculpted form and striking aesthetic will ensure it will be instantly recognizable wherever she travels. Thank you to this design team that gives the opportunity for this vessel to extend its life.
