As suites de luxo em trens de alta velocidade em outras vias provou ser impopular, com bilhetes a mais de 300 dólares americanos.
Com o aumento da inflação, e os custos mais elevados de viver em grandes cidades, muitos chineses estão sentindo o aperto em suas carteiras. O chinês médio não pode permitir tal extravagância. Muitos sentem amargo sobre o fosso crescente entre ricos e pobres no país.
