Bolt Tent – Mobile Lightning Protective Shelter

Bolt Tent is a special project aims to increase the safety of people caught out in the open during a thunderstorm. A few thousand people get struck by lightning every year. About 96 % of those killed and injured are people out in the open. The majority of them are people participating in outdoor activities such as hiking and camping. Many accidents in the mountains can be ascribed to the panic brought about by spectacular lightning that generates extreme fear among tourists. It is estimated that there are a few times more victims indirectly linked to discharges than those struck directly.

Bolt Tent features 3 models: Bolt-Half, Bolt One, and Bolt Air. These tents are made of ultralight materials and thus meet the needs of those practicing many different kinds of outdoor recreation. They can be put up fast and are easy to carry around. They can also protect you against unfavorable weather conditions accompanying thunderstorms, for example rain and wind.

BOLT-ONE
A lightweight, compact, one-person tent with full lightning protection* for longer trips of a few days.
*direct and ground strike (step voltage)

BOLT-AIR
An ultra-lightweight, pneumatic tent with a groundsheet protecting from injuries due to step voltages (the most common way people are struck by lightning). Just like Bolt-Half, thanks to its size, it can be quickly and easily put up in places unsuitable for standard tents. It is designed for day-long trips where additional weight would be burdensome.

BOLT-HALF
A lightweight (1,2 kg) tent with full lightning protection* for day-long trips, indispensable in difficult situations brought by a sudden change of weather conditions (a thunderstorm, downpour, wind). Due to its size, the tent can be put up in seemingly unsuitable places, like a ledge, ridge etc.

The tent underwent high voltage tests with discharges produced by an impulse voltage generator. An electrode imitating a tourist’s head was placed in the tent. The estimated voltage depended on the distance between the tent and the end of the electrode and was varied between 400 kv and 1MV. A High current generator was used to check the tent’s durability. A series of electrical discharges with different peak current values were directed at the top of the tent poles.

Where the pole segments connected to each other scorches could be noticed, which means that those points experienced very high temperatures. That is explained by their relatively high resistance. The tent stakes, which laid freely on the laboratory floor during the tests, melted to some extent. Again, it suggests high temperatures generated at those points during the discharges. A dramatic temperature increase in the short period of time resulted in sparks, i.e. particles of hot aluminum. The generated peak current was comparable to that occurring in a lightning strike. Statistically, lightning strikes vary between 30 and 40 kA, though higher values (more than 200 kA ) have been also reported.

The Iron Zoo of Coalinga

Situated 190 miles south of San Jose, California, is the small town of Coalinga — a name derived by losing the middle term from “Coaling Station A” and joining the leftovers. This town of 15,000 is mainly an agricultural community with Chevron and Aera Energy operating the town’s only oil field. To reach Coalinga, you have to get off Interstate 5 and onto Highway 33. As you drive north towards the town, Coalinga’s oil field will come into view. You will see several oil pump jacks busy bobbing up and down doing their job. Now if you look closely, you will see animals — zebras, giraffes and horses— not the usual kind, but pump jacks painted as animals. Each rooted to its own spot, these iron animals merrily raise and lower their heads, as if grazing in the field.

Happy 75th Birthday to Hayao Miyazaki - Master of Animation

Hayao Miyazaki (born 1941) is both the co-founder of Studio Ghibli and the single most successful and renowned animator in Japan since Osamu Tezuka a.k.a. The Father of Manga (which also makes him the most famous Japanese animator worldwide). He began his career in the early-‘60s at Toei, but came to prominence writing and directing anime for television in the '70s.

In 1984, Miyazaki and producer Isao Takahata scraped together a staff and enough financial support to make a feature film: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, based on a Miyazaki-penned manga. The film’s success allowed Miyazaki and Takahata to set up their own studio - Ghibli - which became their base of operations from then onwards.

Miyazaki has gained notoriety for vocalizing his beliefs regardless of whom he might offend, which makes him a unique case of an executive who goes by his word. Miyazaki currently stands alone as the only anime director recognized by Hollywood’s highest honor, the Academy Award. His 2001 film Spirited Away won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film in 2003 (Miyazaki received a nomination for the same award in 2006 with Howl’s Moving Castleand in 2013 for The Wind Rises).

He has his own fan-made religion.

Korbiyor Futuristic Driverless Electric Hearse Celebrates The Life of Your Deceased Loved One

It looks like Charles Bombardier believes that in the future, coffin can be carried by an autonomous vehicle. Korbiyor is a futuristic driverless electric hearse mounted mecanum wheels (wheels that can move the vehicle into any direction), it features refrigerated transparent coffin that can be raised or lowered in the vehicle, also multimedia projector, and a surround sound system.

This project is based on the idea that we all would leave this earth at some point, so why not go out in style. There are many companies that working on reinventing the way we will be remembered, perhaps this futuristic hearse would open the door for new ideas. In French, a hearse is called a corbillard, that’s where the name of this concept came from.

Since Korbiyor is equipped with mecanum wheels, it can easily move to any direction. This vehicle can slowly rotate and execute maneuvers even in tight spots, thanks to its lightweight composite body, it can easily enter a church and position itself without damaging the floors. This unit is programmed to follow the funeral process leader but there’s a remote control to position it easily and quickly when needed. It can also be programmed to follow a certain pre-set patch and speed.

The transparent coffin is refrigerated by the vehicle’s fuel cell, in this way, the inside temperature would remain cool even on a hot weather. The use of transparent casket is interesting, in this way, people can see the person one last time. The multimedia projector can project videos or images on the floor while the speakers can play music. It’s a cool way to celebrate the life of your deceased loved one.
