Olympic Gymnastic Arena Renovation To Preserve Historical Landmark While Creating New Typology of Public Cultural Performance Facility

Olympic Gymnastics Arena in Seoul, Korea would get a make over. H-Architecture will team up with Haeahn Architecture to renovate the iconic 1988 Olympic Gymnastics Arena, they has won a nation wide competition for their design proposal organized by Korea Sports Promotion Foundation. The old building has become a representation of Korean cultural performance, it is one of largest public parks in Seoul that provide a memorably everyday experience to a large number of visitors.

This large arena will be renovated with the goal to establish a new programmatic identity while preserving the historical and symbolic significance of the existing structure and façade. The majority of existing structure will stay intact, it helps to minimize the constructions scope. For example the circular gallery will still be that way, except that the outer edge would be expanded to accommodate a wider range of event related programs. This space would also be useful for any future expansions. The roof structure would be replaced with a dynamic 3D truss system, inspired by a tornado, symbolizing the building’s central role in global popularity of Korean pop culture.

Olympic Gymnastics Arena’s new design would become a dynamic intersection between the historical legacy and the popularity of Korean culture around the world. A beautiful blend that makes it even stands out since it is located in the largest man-made public parks in Korea. This plan is a great opportunity to preserve iconic landmark while establishing a new typology of public cultural performance facility to fulfill the needs of various users and other cultural events.

Flocks - Photography by Nir Arieli

Nir Arieli is an award winning photographer from Israel. His photos are beautiful and challenging. While most art is focused on the beauty of women and the female form, Nir focuses on and prominently features the male form in his work. His current work Flocks uses dancers in a loose interpretation of flocking birds. See more of Nir Arieli’s work on our previous post.

Realistic Oil Painting by Marta Penter

Brazilian artist Marta Penter draws from her background in psychology to meticulously catalog the countless social cues of dress, hairstyle, posture, and facial expression that allow us to negotiate the realm of others while carving out space for our own experience. On one hand, her work suggests a dream-like reality, with a palette approaching monochrome, figures sometimes floating over pure white backgrounds, and concentrated infusions of sapphire blue, which she introduced to her work after sketching one day in a park with a blue ballpoint pen.

Brushmaster Grass Trimmer Combines Vacuum Cleaner and Grass Trimmer in One

Brushmaster Grass Trimmer is a concept product that combines the best of a vacuum cleaner and a grass trimmer. This design is the result of an effort to create a clarity and easy to understand portable, storable, and manoeuvrable product. This project aims to combine features from two great products on a smaller scale.

The main issue of many operators of string trimmers is collecting those off-cut pieces of grass once the cutting is done. Well, how bout if those cut grass stems are collected right away? Thanks to the aid of a vacuum induced motor. During the cutting process, the grass is pulled up vertically with the help of the vacuum, it means that the grass won’t be flattened by the cutting component, it can be easily cleaned once it’s over.

Brushmaster Grass Trimmer is a wireless device that can be kept in a workspace without being obtrusive. The interface is pretty simple, it only features a two stage trigger and a quick-release button located at the top of the device to make emptying the collected grass quick and easy.

Give Me Five Streetlights : Slap Those Little Hands to Give Those Lamp Posts Electricity

We must say Give Me Five Streetlight is a smart and green design. It’s a concept lamp post with small rotatable hands that encourage passers-by to slap them as in “give me five” to generate electricity. By slapping those cute small hands, this lamp post uses that kinetic energy to power itself. People are welcome to “high five” those hands during the day, since any electricity generated is kept in the battery to be used at night. The level of charge is indicated at the bottom of the post, giving passers-by clues which lamp post that needs their helps.
