According to a study, nearly 45% of customers can’t remember having a recent, successful customer service experience. Receiving poor treatment in a restaurant or buying a new product only to have it turn out defective can really sour your day. Fortunately, customers have more power than ever at our fingertips thanks to the internet. Here are 11 ways to get your voice heard and receive a higher level of customer service.

1. Research

Awareness of the company’s refund policy and guarantee information makes it easier to find out what exactly you’re entitled to. Read the fine print before you make a purchase. For example, some stores only issue store credit and don’t provide refunds. Be familiar with the company’s guarantee and warranty policy. You may be entitled to a free replacement or repair services depending on the defect.

2. Be Empathetic

Kill em’ with kindness. Dale Carnegie’s book, How To Win Friends and Influence People, stresses the importance of being able to see things from another person’s perspective. Try to get the salesperson to sympathize with your cause by treating them like a friend. Instead of lashing out try saying : ”I realize that it isn’t your fault but it’s disappointing to spend $200 on this purse and have the seams fall apart. I was hoping if you could give me a refund or at least store credit?”

3.Be Specific

Specifying exactly what you want makes it easier for the business to make it up to you. Some customers get angry and rant and rave without telling the person on the other end how they can make things better. Don’t be that person. Do you want a discount? A refund? An apology? Be clear and specific when stating your demands.

4. Contact Customer Service

If you’re unable to resolve the issue in person, you may want to contact the company’s 1-800 number. Directories like Dial A Human, Flaptor and Yellow Pages make it easy to obtain contact information for any business. You can increase your chances of getting to a live person by dialing “0.”

If that doesn’t work, try to connect with the sales, billing or tech departments, which are more likely to be staffed. Once you get through, ask them to transfer you to the department you really want. Once you do get a live rep on the line, you have the option of escalating the call further by asking to speak to a supervisor. If that doesn’t work you can escalate it even further up the chain of command. Managers and executives have the power to make decisions that customer service reps don’t.

5. The Power Of The Chargeback

If there’s one thing businesses despise it’s chargebacks. This is when a consumer contacts their credit card company in order to reverse charges and get their funds back. Reasons for a chargeback may include receiving substandard service or being charged without receiving what you ordered. It’s ultimately up to your credit card’s issuing bank to determine if the chargeback is valid or not.

6. Harness The Power of Social Media

Some large companies, such as Ford Motors, actually employ people to comb through social media for mentions of their brand with the purpose of resolving complaints. You can exercise your right to free speech by posting about your experience on Facebook and Twitter. You can also tweet to the offending company directly and mention their brand in a hashag.

7. Utilize The Company’s Online Community

Many big companies like Verizon or Dell, have an online forum or community where members can register and engage with fellow customers. Companies are more likely to address concerns posted on a forum in a timely manner since it’s public.

8. Write An Online Review

More customers than ever are reading online reviews before frequenting a new restaurant or business.

Online review sites like Yelp, Google Places and Angie’s List are taken very seriously by business owners since even one negative review can severely impact their business. Businesses who have claimed their Yelp listing get notified immediately after every new review. Some businesses will also respond publicly to reviews.

What’s great about complaining to the Better Business Bureau is that they will contact the offending company on your behalf. If the company is a member of the Better Business Bureau they will have to respond. Companies that are members have to maintain certain standards in order to keep their membership active.

Give Praise When It’s Due

Acknowledge the company if they resolved the issue, especially if you made a complaint on social media or Yelp. No one is perfect and it’s fair to give a business a second chance if they’ve shown good faith in making things better.

Earning Easy Money on Your Extra Funds

Everyone knows that one of the most important principles of personal finance is to build up your savings in order to have extra money on hand. However, they don’t always tell you what to do with those funds once you have them. For that reason, all too many of us let our checking accounts get fat when our funds could be better used elsewhere.

Don’t let your money just sit there—put it to good use! Here are a few ways you can make some extra money from your savings:

Online bank accounts, CDs, and money markets

If you’re like many people, odds are you simply keep your extra money in a traditional savings account. That’s a good start, but unfortunately the interest rates that most big banks offer are minuscule at best. In fact, several major intuitions pay as little as .01%. Luckily there are other options, and one of the best places to start looking is the Internet.

Since online banks don’t have to deal with many of the costs associated with brick and mortar branches, they typically offer much higher interest rates to their customers. For example, online institutions such as Discover Bank, Ally, Synchrony and others offer savings accounts with interest rates as high as 1%. Additionally, many online banks provide other options like certificates of deposit (CDs) and money markets that can also earn you a return on your money. Both products are somewhat similar to savings accounts but have their own pros and cons.

Starting with CDs, the biggest difference between this option and a regular savings account is how accessible your money is. CDs allow you to deposit money for a set period of time—ranging from one month to 10 years—in order to earn what is typically a higher interest rate. In most cases, the longer the terms, the better the rate. Of course, if you absolutely need the money you’ve deposited, there is a way to get it out. However, you will typically be assessed a penalty for doing so, amounting to a few months worth of the interest you’d collected.

As for money market accounts, they could almost be compared to a savings/checking hybrid. That’s because some banks will allow you to write checks against your money market balance, or perhaps even use a debit card for the account. The downside is that these types of accounts typically require a much higher initial deposit, as well as daily balance requirements you’ll need to maintain in order to avoid penalty. With that in mind, this is really only an option for those with a large chunk of extra cash to stash.

While it might seem odd to put your money into a bank you can’t actually visit, technology is making it easier to live without physical banks. Many of the aforementioned online banks offer mobile apps and other conveniences—such as partnerships with ATM providers—to make accessing your money easier. However, it’s important to note that there are usually limitations on online accounts, including the number of transactions you can make per month. Lastly, be sure to check that the online bank you go with is FDIC-insured just in case.

Dabbling in investing with FinTech

In terms of passively earning on your money, the 1%+ you can get from online savings accounts, CDs, and money markets is pretty great. On the other hand, if you want a potentially bigger reward and are willing to take a few risks, there are a number of ways to get started in the world of investing. Although that might sound intimidating to many, today there are several tools and platforms from financial technology (mashed together to form the incredibly cool sounding term “FinTech”) companies that not only make investing easier, but also offer new ways to make money.

One prime example of this trend is the mobile app Acorns. Basically, this application links to your debit and credit cards to “round up” your purchases to the nearest dollar and invest the change. What’s also cool is that you can adjust your settings to choose whether you want to be more conservative or aggressive with your investments.

Another growing FinTech invention is peer to peer (P2P) lending. P2P is actually strikingly similar to crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo that you’re likely already familiar with, except that sites like Prosper and Lending Club help borrowers in need of loans. Simply put, approved borrowers can have their loans funded by investors, who then earn interest on the loan.

As investing in peer to peer lending has evolved new tools that help to manage the process, such as Lending Robot, which help to automate your loan investments. The peer to peer platforms themselves are also rolling out tools to manage investments. As these tools gain adoption, investing in peer to peer loans will likely become a more mainstream practice to help diversify investment portfolios. That said, you can still get started today with investing as little as $25 in individual loans.

Interestingly, companies, such as Able Lending, are now combining P2P and crowdfunding so that friends and family can lend money more formally for startup businesses. For that reason and others, it’s worth keeping an eye on the FinTech sector for possible investment opportunities in the future.

When it comes to building your savings, there are many places to put your money. Whether your prefer passively earning from online savings accounts or taking on some risk by trying your hand at investing, it’s often worth exploring your options and ensuring that your money is put to work earning you even more.

How to Talk to Your Tween About Puberty

You knew it would come sooner or later. The time is now. It’s time to have the puberty talk.  When should this happen? Should both of you do it? What do you say? Should “the talk” be different for boys than for girls? If surviving three daughters into their teens means anything (your guess is as good as mine), I am a veritable expert. Here’s what I suggest.

What age is best?

Of course, there is no exact correct answer. It is a good idea to have “the talk” before all those changes actually start, so take the lead of most elementary schools. Fifth grade is when they separate the boys and girls and have the puberty lesson. Age eleven is a good time, if not a little late, to talk to your kids about growing up. Ideally, this is an ongoing conversation that started when he or she was learning to talk and learning the names of body parts. Hopefully, this is just an extension of many conversations you’ve had over the years about your child’s body. If not, it’s definitely the time to open that door (just try not to fall through the floor laughing).

Mom, Dad or both?

This might depend upon the child’s gender, the comfort level of each parent and the overall family dynamic. Girls don’t want to talk about periods with dad, usually, but some are more at ease with dad, particularly if living with a single dad. Boys don’t really want mom to explain about pubic hair or masturbation (or dad either, for that matter), but it is a conversation you should not leave entirely to school. Some families have found kids are more comfortable talking to a trusted young adult, like a babysitter, au pair or nanny. What’s most important is starting the conversation and letting your kid know you’re there to answer questions (even if you don’t want to).

What to say?

So you’ve decided he or she is old enough and who is going to do the deed, but what on earth are you supposed to say? When I asked my eleven-year-old son how he thought it best for parents to talk about this topic to kids, his first response was ask them if they want to talk about it. Then he advised, be subtle. (This kid cracks me up!) He’s right, though. Don’t force this conversation down your kid’s throat and keep it light, at their level, and open-ended. The conversation doesn’t need to take hours or be very detailed. In fact, a bunch of little short convos seems ideal to me. Offer to answer questions that might come up, and then be prepared to answer them, honestly. I was relieved when my young teen daughter came to me with her questions about oral sex (about a scene she had read in a book), but I chose my words carefully when explaining, just enough but not too much! My point: be prepared for tough questions!

Boy talk vs. Girl talk?

Yeah, the content will be similar, but different. Your son should know what goes on for girls, generally speaking, without all the gory details. Your daughter should know boys experience changes in puberty too, but probably don’t need visual aids. No matter the gender, pre-teens, or tweens as they are called these days, need to know Bob Dylan’s wise and true words, “the times they are a’ changin.” Content of each conversation will differ slightly with the overall theme that body changes are normal, adults understand and are available to help or answer questions, and there is light at the end of the tunnel of adolescence (except it’s this sometimes crappy thing called adulthood with jobs, responsibilities, taxes and wishing you were a kid again).

You’ll survive it. Remember “the talk” with your own parents? It is okay to feel nervous or weird, or both. After all, you spent years trying to prevent your kids from talking about these “inappropriate” subjects. In the end, be sure to make your child feel like you are available, if a bit uncomfortable. Humor helps. Be sure he or she knows you will give honest answers. Don’t sugarcoat it, but don’t give more information than you think your kid can handle. When you have an older child who has already gone through, or is in the midst of adolescence, you may have another resource. Make sure, though, that your older child doesn’t give false or too much information to your younger one.
