5 Productivity Tools For 2017

If New Year’s resolutions are not on your mind then they probably should be. With the new year set to start in less than two weeks, most people are likely starting to ponder on how they are going to do better in 2016. Sure, New Year’s resolutions typically only last a few weeks, but that is because they typically only take a single day to plan. Start planning now and make resolutions that you can keep, then figure out exactly how you are going to get yourself to accomplish those resolutions.

Luckily, every year that goes by comes with a slew of new and exciting apps and tools that help people become more productive. If you are looking for a few tools to make your 2017 a success, try these.

1. Evernote

Evernote is nearly an all-inclusive productivity app. It is supposed to help people organize everything they are doing into one neat place. We are talking about files, notepads, and other types of information. The best part of Evernote is that it is on the cloud so that everyone that needs to can have access to the right content.

Think of Evernote as a digital version of that old planner that your mom used to carry around. Just as useful, twice as organized, hundreds of times more convenient.

2. Toggl

Toggl is a way to keep track of your time. Sure, it might take a few extra seconds to keep track of everything you do, but studies show that people are significantly more productive when they know where their time is going. It is just a fact of life that when something is measured, it improves. The Toggl app works across pretty much every device as well, making it easy for everyone on a work team to succeed.

3. Hound

Another interesting name in productivity apps, Hound is essentially a much-improved version of Siri. You can ask Hound anything you want and it can forecast weather, find coffee shops, and quite a bit more. You don’t need to do keyword prompts or use any special phrases either.

The way to know that Hound must be good is that it is succeeding in the Apple store. This means that people with access to Siri are still choosing to use Hound as an alternative. This is a good sign that Hound beats Siri.

One of our favorite features was the ability to narrow in search results. For example, you can not only tell Hound to find you a hotel, but you can tell it exactly what type of hotel you want it to find and how much you are willing to spend.

4. Zapier

Zapier has been around for a little longer but is essentially a great way to automate processes in life and in the workplace. There are more processes available to automate than could possibly be said in one article. Suffice to say, nearly everyone in the world has at least a few processes that Zapier could make more efficient. Even if it just saves twenty seconds on a task that you do ten times a day, the savings in a month or year is astounding.

5. Google Drive

One would hope that everyone has heard of Google Drive, perhaps even used it at this point. However, one cannot write about tools for productivity without including Google Drive. Google Drive is the ultimate organizer for all files. This includes pictures, videos, Word files, Excel files, PDFs and more. It operates like a simple filing cabinet, except digitized.

A few of the best parts about Google Drive are the cost (it is free) and the cloud. You are able to access everything you have managed to digitize in seconds from any device that can access the internet. It is also great to know that Google is incredibly secure and has backups of everything in multiple locations.

8 Foods For a Flatter Tummy

8 foods for a flatter tummy

In order to get a flatter tummy, you have to lose weight. In order to lose weight, you need to consume fewer calories than you burn. There are many low-calorie foods out there that can help you accomplish this. Here are 10 of my favorites.

1. Strawberries

strawberries

Berries of any sort are way lower calorie than you would expect for the sweetness and volume. Strawberries are just my favorite — blackberries too. A full 100g serving of berries yields 30-40 calories, tons of fiber, and antioxidants. You could eat a full pound of berries for less than 150 calories. They’ll curb your sweet tooth too.

2. Popcorn (unbuttered)

popcorn

Movie theater popcorn is one of the worst possible things you could eat while dieting. A large bag of popcorn at your average theater puts you down upwards of 1000 calories. The problem is the butter. Getting completely unbuttered popcorn is ridiculously low-calorie in comparison and very high volume to keep you full. It’s an excellent salty snack to kick yet another craving while trying to lose the belly fluff.

3. Zucchini

zucchini

Zucchini is actually quite versatile when it comes to dieting. Boasting only about half the calories of the same amount of berries (only about 17 calories per 100g), it will keep you ridiculously full. It’s an excellent tool for big eaters. You can split your zucchini down the middle and use it as pizza crust for low-carb zucchizza. You can even grate up your zucchini and throw it into your oats to double (or even triple) the volume. Trust me, you won’t taste them. I was skeptical at first too. I’ve come to find it’s one of the most awesome tricks to help you eat more food while consuming fewer calories.

4. Greek Yogurt

greek yogurt

Greek yogurt is another versatile, high-volume food for fewer calories. It has the added benefit of being extra high protein too. In comparison to carbs and fats, protein burns the most calories while digesting so you get an extra metabolic boost. Throw some berries into your greek yogurt for a low-cal, high-protein, extremely filling, sweet snack.

5. Egg Whites

egg whites

Remember what I just said about protein having the highest metabolic calorie-burn? Well, egg whites are one of the few foods out there that is almost 100% protein. Lean meats are close, but they typically have more fat than egg whites. It’s important to eat enough protein so that your muscles don’t shrink. This helps you decrease your body fat percentage as you lose weight and will make your stomach appear flatter and more defined. I like my egg whites with a little garlic and hot sauce.

6. Oatmeal

oatmeal

Yes, carbs are on the list. You need carbs to fuel your workouts and you should definitely be working out if you want to see the best results. Oats are one of the best options because they are slow-digesting and contain B-vitamins to give you prolonged energy throughout the day. I usually eat my oats about an hour before my workouts. If you need an extra protein kick, try mixing in a scoop of protein powder into them! For extra volume, throw in some grated zucchini to make zoats!

7. Grilled Chicken

grilled chicken

Grilled chicken is a staple in most bodybuilding diets. That’s because it is one of the leanest meats out there and provides a whopping 25-30g of protein per 4 oz piece. Sure, it’s not as good as fried chicken — just remember the goal you’ve set for yourself. Fried chicken sandwiches are great, but grilled chicken sandwiches are pretty darn good too. Throw on some honey mustard and you’re golden.

8. Unsweetened Almond Milk

almond milk

Almond milk is an excellent low-calorie, low-carb alternative to regular dairy milk. I prefer skim milk myself, but almond milk boasts only about 1/3 of the calories skim milk does. For those looking to cut back on the calories, almond milk is definitely a good option for your cereals and even as a mix in for some tasty drinks. Some people even use it for baking.

In order to see the best results, you should also implement an exercise routine. You can find a list of over 100 5-minute core workouts you can do at home without a gym membership here.

Cardio is also important to increase calorie burn and see results faster. Implement 2 or 3 20-30 minute cardio sessions weekly to speed up your results.

That said, stay consistent and be patient. Change takes time. If you stick to your guns with the proper nutrition and exercise, your results will be amazing.

5 costly SEO and Social Media Mistakes Made by Small Business Owners

Small businesses are very fragile in nature. They tend to fail at a much higher rate than bigger businesses.

Since online presence is important for the survival of home-based and small businesses, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and social media have become extremely significant for the success of small businesses. SEO and social media marketing are not free. They require an investment of time, money and effort to provide the results which ultimately translate into more revenue and profits.

To achieve this, small business owners need to avoid following mistakes:

1. Not paying attention to grammar

For good SEO, your content needs to be relevant and written in proper English. Google has become so smart that it favors content that contains correct grammar and well-written paragraphs. If you are hiring an SEO expert who is not a native speaker of English to optimize an English-language site, make sure you check the content and proofread it carefully.

If you cannot accurately proofread your content yourself, it is better to hire an SEO Company that can effectively handle your content strategy and ensure that everything on your website is written in perfect English. You therefore need to place more emphasis on writing in perfect English, and you need to stick with quality content.

2. Not understanding the changes made by Google

One of the key content strategy mistakes small business owners make is their lack of knowledge about how Google’s core algorithm works. Though the full algorithm may be too technical for an entrepreneur to understand completely, being aware of the basic principles is of critical importance to the success of any online business.

A good SEO strategy requires you to keep track of changes at Google that affect content. Otherwise, your money spent on SEO efforts can be wasted. Continue to read good blogs and talk with your local SEO service providers to learn more about what changes are coming up and what you can do to take advantage of them.

3. Not following and unfollowing fans

If you want to get a lot of followers on social media sites for free, the most effective method is to follow and unfollow people.

For a small business, a strong presence on social media is important. To get a lot of free fans on both Twitter and Instagram, a follow and unfollow strategy works great. Simply find the people you want to follow, i.e. followers of a top celebrity or big business in your local area, and start following them. The overall idea is that people tend to follow back those who follow them. Even if only 10% follow you back, this number would greatly add to your list of followers if you work on the strategy consistently.

Make sure you target the right type of audience before following them. You can do this in different ways on different platforms, as platforms like Instagram allow you to search for people by their geographical location. For Twitter, you can target the fans of local celebrities.

Once you reach a certain number of people you are following, start unfollowing them. Unfollowing people is a necessary step because following too many people, while your own account has few followers, can make your account look ordinary.

4. Not following local fans

Small businesses are always local, so they do not require a global audience to sell their products and services. To effectively utilize your budget for social media, always make sure to get local followers. There are a lot of service providers who will offer to get you ten thousand followers for few bucks, but they are useless if they are from some unknown country or do not matter for your business.

Almost all social media platforms, i.e. Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, offer local targeting. When making your social media strategy, always narrow down your audience to get best results. It is always better to have few paying fans instead of lots of fans who simply like your posts and do not buy.

5. Not writing how-to guides

Having a blog is essential for the success of the business, and if the small business is selling a service or product, it is always great to share how-to guides. How-to guides are step-by-step instructions to perform certain tasks. Essentially, they add more value for your customer and help them understand the services or products sold on the website.

Writing how-to guides allows a lot of good content to be shared on a consistent basis. This practice certainly creates more value for customers. Small business owners must learn to invest in getting great content.

Above are some simple yet costly mistakes which must be avoided. Otherwise, all efforts to get an online footprint may simply be in vain.

3 Steps to Being Fearless, Epic & Free In 2017

At 32 years old, I feared everything – most of all fear itself. However, with some simple mindset and action-oriented changes I was able to turn my life around. These aren’t even huge changes. Most of them are annoyingly small changes that you barely notice until you look back and think, ‘can it be that simple?’ I want to pass these steps on to you so, come 2017, you can start living a fearless, epic and free life too!

Step One: Stop Listening to Yourself – You’re Too Smart

Ever noticed how often successful people; the ones that achieve just what they want in the face of insurmountable odds are…stupid? How many times have you thought to yourself, ‘if they can do it, anyone can – right?’

The thing is, they may be awesome because of their idiotness, and not in spite of it. Think about it –

Smart people weigh up the pros and cons, take intelligent risks and proceed with wise and measured caution, benchmarking their decisions against the wisdom and experience of others.

Dumb people just do it.

Smart people listen to those who are smarter than themselves to fully understand a scenario and are realistic about their chances.

Morons couldn’t care less – they just start and allow momentum to carry them.

Smart people often don’t even start; dumb people use reckless abandon as a tool.

Stop trying to be smart – smart sucks. Just find what you want, even if it’s crazy, and then go after it like an animal. The energy you create will gain its own momentum and then weird things start happening. Opportunities will come to you and before you know it, boom, awesome life!

Step Two: Be Selfish

The world is filled with selfless people. They’re so committed to helping others at the expense of themselves that sometimes they manage to help neither. To be useful to others you need resources, and to gather said resources, you need to be focused on your own success first, and other people’s second. The airline safety drill says, ‘Always attach your own mask before helping others.’ Why? Because you can’t help them when you’re choking for life.

Feel uncomfortable? Good – because change feels strange, but if what you’re already doing isn’t working, you need to fight through that feeling and get to the other – epic – side.

Step Three: Stop Setting Goals—Visualize It into Being

I know you’ve heard it before, but why aren’t you doing it? That’s what a coach said to me after I said that I understood visualization and the importance of it.

Visualization is not seeing realistic goals already being achieved, (well it can be), but that’s not the best possible version. Instead of being afraid, map out a path and visualize the end result.

Visualize something that gives you a feeling of raw energy inside. Create a mental scenario that makes your blood boil with excitement, so much so that it’s all you can think about. Feel it. Taste it. Experience it, not as if it’s coming, but as though it’s already here, right now.

Want a new car? Drive it, smell and feel the interior, see the paint.

Want to live a freelance life? You’ll see things like cheap hotels, awesome technology, amazing views, skateboards attached to backpacks and new food being tasted in large crowds. You’ll see grateful clients, pride from your loved ones and other people reaching out for advice.

2017 is coming up and is yours for the taking. But when that smart person tells you it can’t be done, remember – you’re way too stupid to listen to them.

At least, I hope so.

How to Effectively Deal with Alcohol Cravings

Almost 31% of all deaths in the United States can be attributed to alcohol use. It’s actually the leading cause of death within North America which is why millions of dollars are spent each year battling alcohol use. There has been progress over the years because an organization like MADD (mothers against drunk driving) have lobbied to get rules changed making consequences stricter on those who get caught impaired behind the wheel.

However, even with so much effort is put towards controlling drinking and driving, we’ll still fail to make a huge difference in our society. I believe if you can control the cravings, then you might be able to reduce the overall fatalities greatly.

After doing some extensive research, I was able to put together a list of effective strategies to help people control alcoholic cravings. Let’s explore some of the top strategies:

Remove Yourself from Risky Situations

One of the best ways to avoid alcoholic cravings is to remove yourself from any situation where you can drink. This is why people who are looking to stop drinking will avoid going to bars, or even ordering alcohol. However, remember this is only for the time being, and once you’re effectively able to control your cravings, you can slowly pull yourself back into alcoholic environments.

Friend on Speed Dial

When you first join AA (alcohol anonymous), the first thing they’ll recommend is to have a friend you can call when you have cravings. This friend should be someone who doesn’t drink or is someone who has been through the program. This way when you have cravings, you’ll be able to call someone for immediate support who will guide you in the right direction. Make sure this is a person you trust and one who has your best interests in mind.

Transition Slowly

It’s hard to control cravings from day one so space out your progress extending time slowly. For example, I would start by focusing on getting through a day, then two, a week, a month, etc. However, don’t let no one push you too quick and go at a pace which you’re happy with. If you transition too quickly then you’ll increase the likelihood of a major binge later.

Meditate

We are now living in an era where spirituality is at an all time high…right? When you watch TV, you have people talking about meditation and relaxation. Amazon.com has stated that spiritual books are selling more now than before because people have taken a keen interest in meditating. So, the next time you are facing a serious craving, it’s important to meditate because this will help you focus on your well-being and take your mind off alcohol.

Eat Sugar

Alcohol contains a lot of sugar which is why you put on weight when you drink excessively. The next time you have a craving, I would recommend eating something sweet. Keep chocolate in your house or something which will control your cravings quickly. Here’s a great list of items which can satisfy a craving:

  • Chocolate
  • Energy drinks
  • Cookies
  • Frozen yogurt
  • Coke or Sprite

Think Consequences

Many of us are trying to steer off alcohol because of a very bad experience. Some are even trying to avoid alcohol because of something bad which happened to a close friend. The next time you have a craving, it’s important to think about the bad experience or consequence. Make sure you choose a “harsh” consequence so all you need to do is think about it and it’ll deter you from the craving your having.

Detox Program

If you recently quit drinking, then you’ll be having withdrawals which might be very hard to control. If you find yourself having an extra hard time, then consider a detox program. You can visit a center or download a complete program online. The goal of a detox program is the following.

First, it’s to diagnose and treat symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. Secondly, it’s to prevent serious events like a relapse, and seizures which do happen when quitting abruptly. If you find yourself battling with alcohol withdrawal then visit a center to find out more about how they can help. Here’s some more information on a complete alcohol detox program.

Substitute

One way to control cravings is to find a substitute for alcohol. This can be in the form of a sweet drink or even a hobby to keep you from going to alcoholic settings. A great way to explore some options would be to do a quick search online and see what’s available for recreation around you. Try out different things like sports, arts, or even traveling because I’ve found these are all great substitutes going forward.
