Automotive in Hyperrealistic Paintings by Marcello Petisci

Marcello Petisci is an artist painter born in Brussels, Belgium in 1963.

Before starting to paint I examine the variables of the types of objects painted, the form of the main subject and the place it is given within the painting. Each element in the picture has been considered and then chosen for the space it occupies in relation to the other elements already in place.

“real things in real spaces, here and now.”

Distinguished by the use of vibrant colors, Stephen Antonakos (1926 – 2013) was a pioneer in introducing neon into the realm of fine art, giving it new perceptual and formal meanings. Colored pencil drawings on paper and vellum, often in series, have been an equally rich practice of the artist.

Around 1960, when it was becoming clear that neon would be his primary medium, Stephen Antonakos called neon a “controlled paradise.” This phrase indicates both the innate rigor of his vision and his readiness to discover new possibilities. Neon is natural, an element of the earth, Number 10 on the Periodic Table. His art is based on light, scale, proportions, and the relations between geometric forms and their overall relation to their site. It has nothing to do with neon’s previous uses, only with its new capabilities as purely abstract linear and spatial color. Antonakos turned away from illusions, allusions, representations, metaphor and symbol.

Paintings by Charming Baker (b. 1964)

Baker’s work explores well-trodden and intrinsically linked themes; life, love, death, terror, joy, despair… with an underlying reference to the classics and a dark humour. Although primarily a painter with an interest in narrative and an understanding of the tradition of painting, in recent years Baker has produced sculptural pieces in a wide and varied choice of materials, (from the anciently traditional to the not so).

Baker is also known to purposefully damage his delicate painting, including drilling, cutting and occasionally shooting them with a shotgun, intentionally and inadvertently putting to question the preciousness of art, and adding to the emotive charge of the work he produces.

Charming Baker lives and works in London.

Agar Plasticity Project Wins Lexus Design Award 2016

AGAR Plasticity is an innovative project that explores how agar or known as gelatinous material obtained from marine algae can be used as eco-friendly packaging material. It aims to reduce the use of plastic, as well as reducing plastic waste. Seaweed derived agar is traditionally consumed as food in Japan, but used in scientific and medical fields worldwide. It is usually sold in dry state, it has porous and feathery structure, very light despite its volume. Thanks to those features, AMAM Design Team (Kosuke Araki, Noriaki Maetani, and Akira Muraoka) has been exploring possibility to use agar as packaging material.

Goods are usually wrapped in plastic materials, but once unwrapped, that plastic is usually thrown to garbage or collected to be recycled. However, considering raw materials and energy for processing, this situation should be improved.

Agar can be extracted by boiling specific kinds of red algae, then dehydrating the soup. It’s easy, but the result state also depends on the ways of dehydration and the types of red algae. To get a soft cushioning structure, it’s frozen, but for stiff film-like state, it’s compressed. Once a product is unwrapped, the packaging can be disposed in an environmentally friendly way.
