Black and White Photography by Nathan Wirth

Nathan Wirth, a native San Franciscan, is a self-learned photographer who uses a variety of techniques– including long exposure, infrared, and intentional camera movement– to express his unending wonder of the fundamental fact of existence. Wirth, who earned both his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in English Literature from San Francisco State University, brings a deep appreciation of poetry to his explorations of place (especially the sea). Poets such as George Oppen, James Schuyler, Seamus Heaney, Lorine Niedecker, Elizabeth Bishop, William Wordsworth, Robert Frost, and George Mackay Brown have played a fundamental role in shaping his attention to the things and places that he photographs. Often returning to the same locations many times, Wirth seeks to explore the silence and the sublimity of those places. Wirth makes his living teaching English Composition at City College of San Francisco.

Paintings by Chloe Early

Chloe Early born 1980 is a London-based artist who creates beautiful paintings exploring the themes of weightlessness and gravity. Working in oils on linen and aluminium panel, Chloe has developed a unique style that is simultaneously lush and raw. The romantic and the gritty meet in her paintings, which tease out a distinctively poetic worldview through the juxtaposition of extremes.

Capturing Breath - Photography by Tomohide Ikeya

Photographer Tomohide Ikeya created and underwater series called “Breathe”.  His work explores the human ability to persevere even in the face of death.

When we are covered in water, the fear inside of us comes to the surface. Beyond this, the condition of not being able to breathe reveals our attachment to life. I capture this entirely unpredictable scene of struggle.

I superimpose this highly restrictive scene onto human “life.” People encounter all kinds of troubles during their lives. Even if someone knocks down a barrier preventing them from doing something with their own hands, this will not change the fundamental essence of our own limitations. These limitations, too, are part of “living.”

Perhaps the essence of life, granted to everyone, is to live while struggling against death. Math or science can’t change this. Life is not just about visible beauty, but also about true strength, which we have from birth. (VIA)

The goes to great lengths to explore these ideas.  His photos are not only beautiful, but also on another level disturbing.  This is the mark of great art. Thanks to Pondly.
