Project description

Located on Cortes Island, British Columbia, the Cortes Residence is sited on a granite cliff face that serves as a wind break for Cortes Bay and the Seattle and Vancouver yacht clubs. To the south, the house is exposed to the Straight of Georgia which delivers 100mph plus winds and salt spray during winter storms. To withstand the winds, the house structure is embedded into the bedrock with cross braced steel columns and exposed floor beams allowing the house to cantilever gracefully off the hillside.

The entry side of the house sits level with the bedrock and is made up of visually solid concrete forms that create the entry space and anchor the house to the site. From the entry, one accesses the central great room which includes the living, dining and kitchen, all with expansive views to the straight beyond. The main gathering space opens up to a south facing exterior deck by way of a grand 11ft tall by 24ft wide custom sliding door. This great room is flanked by a guest suite and study to the west and a master suite that captures the morning sunlight from the east.

Lyra 60-meter SWATH by Marco Ferrari and Alberto Franchi

Project Lyra is a 60-meter SWATH (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull), offers much more living space and comfort compared with a monohull. SWATH is an innovative hull concept for smooth service in rough seas. This yacht, developed for Young Designer of the Year contest is thought for a renowned composer and his family to cruise and explore in all climates from tropical to polar.

There are many outdoor spaces incorporating convivial dining and lounging areas with many inside spaces for the high latitudes, each one with a beautiful view on the sea thanks to the floor-to-ceiling glass. The crew area is on the port side of the main deck except for the Officers and Captain’s cabin on the upper deck near the bridge.

The main deck opens with the salon, linked with the upper deck with an open ceiling. There is an interior dining area with a view on the sea looking forward; on the starbord side we have a VIP cabin with a private lounge and spa facilities.

On the upper deck we can see a family lounge, an interior swimming pool for outside cold temperatures and a 12-seats cinema that can be transformed into a chamber orchestra area according to the owner’s passion and work. The outside presents a dining area.

The sky-lounge deck is dedicated to the owner and his family: the Master cabin is located forward and has a private office, two bathrooms, a walk-in wardrobe, a private owner’s lounge and an exterior jacuzzi. Other four double cabins and outside lounging areas complete this deck. On the sun deck there is a covered bar, lounging areas with a turning sofa and an additional swimming-pool. We can see a beach club on the stern where a sliding ladder gives easy access to the water as the client requested.

Under the main deck a garage can store up to five tenders for amusement and safety and two jetskis; a hoist can lower the boats in calm waters between the hulls giving the guests the opportunity to get on board the tenders in tranquillity.

Project description

A new home for the Fire Brigade : Fire Station Doetinchem combines sustainability , functionality and an attractive working and living environment in a green oasis

The Fire Brigade Achterhoek West Doetinchem is 24 hours operational and the building houses a mix of functions for working, living and sleeping facilities. A spatial development with various vistas makes the organization clear and transparent, allowing visitors a glimpse of the dynamic environment of the fire station. The robust brick building is designed as a villa in the green and has obtained an A+ energy label. It is embedded in its ecological structure, situated next to an important route for bats. Functionality, sustainability and environmental integration have been the leading design themes during the process.

Villa in green surroundings

The Fire station in Doetinchem is designed as a villa, integrated in the landscape. It is a green oasis situated along side the major thoroughfare in Doetinchem. The horizontally oriented building is surrounded by majestic trees and has clear, crisp lines and surfaces. The grass of the surrounding countryside is pulled over the building in a large slope and evolves into a series of roof gardens and patios on top of the sheltered area for the fire trucks. Because of the slope, the exercise facilities are hidden from view, thus guaranteeing a green environment.

Transparent

The Fire station houses several functions with a variety of appearance and atmosphere: the sheltered area for the fire trucks, the workshops and car wash on the ground floor, the bedrooms on the first floor and on the upper layer the offices, work-café, fitness room and living areas. Because of the high transparency, there is an abundance of daylight coming into the building. The big windows ensure panoramic views of the green surroundings. The various vistas create different views and unexpected perspectives; For instance the sheltered area for the fire trucks can be viewed from the locker room on the first floor and from the hall the Fire trucks can be seen.

A striking feature of the interior is the majestic staircase that connects all floors and functions. Along side the staircase is a light wooden wall which folds around the service unit on the top floor. The office floor is fully developed in accordance with the new way of working, with open office spaces and flexible furnishing. Cohesion and identity are created by a variation in materials: glass, brick, wood, embossed concrete and natural patterns. On the upper floor roof gardens, patio’s and terraces provide the building of its specific sculptural expression, creating outdoor spaces with their own specific identity. Huge cantilevers form a sheltered area for the fire trucks, anchoring the building in its surroundings.
