Inspired by Hanok, Vernacular Versatility is the winning design of 9th annual Evolo Skyscraper Competition. Yong Ju Lee was inspired by Hanok, a traditional Korean house that is defined by its exposed wooden structural system along with tiled roof. Modern world has eliminated Hanok in every town, especially after modern apartments are rising. A bit about this historical building, Hanok has been known for its efficient of eco-friendly function and healing effectiveness, yes, healing. Today, many people try to move in to Hanok to cure asthma or atopy which usually caused by environment, but unfortunately there are only about less than 1% Hanok available in Korea.

The curved edge of the roof is adjustable to control the amount of sunlight entering the house, the central part of the structure is wooden connection called Gagu. Gagu is located below the main roof system where column meets the beam and girder, fastened without any nails. This unique connection makes this building boasts main aesthetic characteristics of traditional Korean architecture. In the old days, this structure was developed to one-story residences only, but with today’s technology and various modeling software, it is highly possible to apply this traditional concept to complex high rise structures yet still meet the contemporary purposes.
Vernacular Versatility opens new possibilities to bring back the old tradition to present day, with efficiency and beauty. It is hoped to get people’s attention and stimulate their interest in traditional architecture.

By integrating a stand and lock, Leglock allows you to make swift bicycle parking. This concept redefines the meaning of bike kickstand, this combination allows you to park and lock in just one simple step, very quick and easy to use. All you need to do is set an integrated number lock. Unlike typical kickstands that rotate parallel to the wheel, Leglock arcs down from its stowed position. It stays upright while you’re riding the bike due to the angle at which it is mounted and the internal 3-teeth gear mechanism, it’s strong and safe lock to keep your bike from being stolen.
