A car bomb explodes as a member of a Thai bomb squad was inspecting it in Narathiwat province, south of Bangkok.

The officer, who was wearing a protective suit, was attempting to open the front passenger door of the parked car when the bomb exploded.

Authorities arrived at the scene after receiving a tip-off about the abandoned car, which was left in a no-parking zone.

The bomb disposal expert despite being lawn away nearly 10-meters by the explosion, picked himself up and walked away. He was treated for minor injuries.

Authorities said the bomb was triggered by remote from someone near the scene.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks so far, but the incident was believed to be linked to Muslim militants.

World's first night-flowering orchid discovered

ON A REMOTE ISLAND in Papua New Guinea, scientists have uncovered the world's only known orchid to produce flowers exclusively at night that die by the next morning.

Of more than 25,000 species in the orchid, only a handful flower in the evening. The new orchid, dubbed Bulbophyllum nocturnum, is the first known one whose flowers shrivel and fall off before dawn breaks.

Dendrobium chrysopterum - discovered bybotanist Andre Schuiteman in 1990 in PNG and described by him and Ed de Vogel. Found only in the forests of Eastern New Guinea.

Bulbophyllum nocturnum is the first known orchid whose flowers bud at night and shrivel and fall off before dawn breaks.

Bulbophyllum xanthomelanon is a member of the section Epicrianthes, closely related to Bulbophyllum nocturnum. They resent disturbance and are difficult to cultivate.

Bulbophyllum tarantula. New species of the orchid family are found all the time. This relative of Bulbophyllum nocturnum was found recently by the same team of researchers and is endemic to PNG.

Bulbophyllum macrorhopalon. Found in New Guinea at elevations around 1800m, this orchid blooms in the autumn, a very short bloom with a single flower.

Bulbophyllum macneiceae - Also found in Papua New Guinea, this orchid is one of the 18 species of Epicrianthes endemic to the island.

Bulbophyllum johannuli. This rare member of the Epicrianthes section is found only in the Bismarck archipelago in PNG.

Bulbophyllum cimicinum. Also found in the Bismarck archipelago, this single-flower orchid needs dry seasons to survive.

Mr Geach is rubbing doggy shampoo into his pet's almost white coat while his wife Emma films his adorable reaction.

Such is Casper's relaxation that he almost forgets to close his eyes as his head drops further into the water.

Mr Geach, 37, from Los Angeles, said: "Casper has a bath about once a week. Usually he will patiently sit or lay down on his stomach while I bathe him.

"On this particular day he was laying on his stomach and I lifted up on of his front paws to wash his belly and he just flipped over onto his back by himself. I began soaping up his underside and he was enjoying it so much he just let his head dip into the water until just his snout was showing.

The family bought Casper in November last year and give him almost weekly baths because he gets dirty so quickly.

"He began getting frequent baths right from the beginning because he seems to love sprinklers and muddy puddles,"said Mr Geach.

"I don't know why he loves it so much but it is adorable.

"Even when someone else is in the bath he will stand next to the tub and stare. Sometimes he will hang his head over the side and drink some of the water."

Catatumbo, the everlasting storm

The mysterious "Relámpago del Catatumbo" (Catatumbo lightning) is a unique natural phenomenon in the world. Located on the mouth of the Catatumbo river at Lake Maracaibo (Venezuela), the phenomenon is a cloud-to-cloud lightning that forms a voltage arc more than five kilometre high during 140 to 160 nights a year, 10 hours a night, and as many as 280 times an hour.

This almost permanent storm occurs over the marshlands where the Catatumbo River feeds into Lake Maracaibo and it is considered the greatest single generator of ozone in the planet, judging from the intensity of the cloud-to-cloud discharge and great frequency. The area sees an estimated 1,176,000 electrical discharges per year, with an intensity of up to 400,000 amperes, and visible up to 400 km away. This is the reason why the storm is also known as the Maracaibo Beacon as light has been used for navigation by ships for ages.

In 1595 sir Francis Drake tried to attack the city of Maracaibo but the local defence caught sight of his ships thanks to the light from the storm. It is also said that Catatumbo lightening gave Almirante Padilla victory over the Spanish float during the independence war, on july 24 1823.

The collision with the winds coming from the Andes Mountains causes the storms and associated lightning, a result of electrical discharges through ionised gases, specifically the methane created by the decomposition of organic matter in the marshes. Being lighter than air, the gas rises up to the clouds, feeding the storms.

Some local environmentalists hope to put the area under the protection of UNESCO, as it is an exceptional phenomenon, the greatest source of its type for regenerating the planet's ozone layer.

An Egyptian book restoration official arranges burnt pages of the original ancient copy identified as "Le Description de L'Egypt", (The Description of Egypt,) written by scientists who came with Napoleon Bonaparte's expedition to Egypt in the late 18th century, which were saved from the research center in Cairo, Egypt, Monday, Dec. 19, 2011. The building was almost completely gutted by a fire which broke out during the height of the clashes on Saturday, when troops on its roof and on other nearby rooftops hurled rocks down on protesters below.

Volunteers in white lab coats, surgical gloves and masks stood on the back of a pickup truck Monday along the banks of the Nile River in Cairo, rummaging through stacks of rare 200-year-old manuscripts that were little more than charcoal debris.

The volunteers, ranging from academic experts to appalled citizens, have spent the past two days trying to salvage what's left of some 192,000 books, journals and writings, casualties of Egypt's latest bout of violence.

Institute d'Egypte, a research center set up by Napoleon Bonaparte during France's invasion in the late 18th century, caught fire during clashes between protesters and Egypt's military over the weekend. It was home to a treasure trove of writings, most notably the handwritten 24-volume Description de l'Egypte, which began during the 1798-1801 French occupation.

The compilation, which includes 20 years of observations by more than 150 French scholars and scientists, was one of the most comprehensive descriptions of Egypt's monuments, its ancient civilization and contemporary life at the time.

The Description of Egypt is likely burned beyond repair. Its home, the two-story historic institute near Tahrir Square, is now in danger of collapsing after the roof caved in.

"The burning of such a rich building means a large part of Egyptian history has ended," the director of the institute, Mohammed al-Sharbouni, told state television over the weekend. The building was managed by a local non-governmental organization.

Al-Sharbouni said most of the contents were destroyed in the fire that raged for more than 12 hours on Saturday. Firefighters flooded the building with water, adding to the damage.

During the clashes a day earlier, parts of the parliament and a transportation authority office caught fire, but those blazes were put out quickly.

The violence erupted in Cairo Friday, when military forces guarding the Cabinet building, near the institute, cracked down on a 3-week-old sit-in to demand the country's ruling generals hand power to a civilian authority. At least 14 people have been killed.

Zein Abdel-Hady, who runs the country's main library, is leading the effort to try and save what's left of the charred manuscripts.

"This is equal to the burning of Galileo's books," Abdel-Hady said, referring to the Italian scientist whose work proposing that the earth revolved around the sun was believed to have been burned in protest in the 17th century.

Below Abdel-Hady's office, dozens of people sifted through the mounds of debris brought to the library. A man in a surgical coat carried a pile of burned paper with his arms carefully spread, as if cradling a baby.

The rescuers used newspapers to cover some partially burned books. Bulky machines vacuum-packed delicate paper.

At least 16 truckloads with around 50,000 manuscripts, some damaged beyond repair, have been moved from the sidewalks outside the U.S. Embassy and the American University in Cairo, both near the burned institute, to the main library, Abdel-Hady said.

He told The Associated Press that there is no way of knowing what has been lost for good at this stage, but the material was worth tens of millions of dollars — and in many ways simply priceless.

"I haven't slept for two days, and I cried a lot yesterday. I do not like to see a book burned," he said. "The whole of Egypt is crying."

He said that there are four other handwritten copies of the Description of Egypt. The French body of work has also been digitized and is available online.

There may have been a map of Egypt and Ethiopia, dated in 1753, that was destroyed in the fire. However, another original copy of the map is in Egypt's national library, he said. The gutted institute also housed 16th century letters and manuscripts that were bound and shelved like books.

The most accessible inventory at the moment for what was housed in the institute is in a 1920's book kept in the U.S. Library of Congress, according to William Kopycki, a regional field director with the Washington D.C.-based library. He said the body of work that was destroyed was essential for researchers of Egyptian history, Arabic studies and Egyptology.

"It's a loss of a very important institute that many scholars have visited," he said during a meeting with Abdel-Hady to evaluate the level of destruction.

What remains inside the historic building near the site of the clashes are piles of burned furniture, twisted metal and crumbled walls. A double human chain of protesters surrounded the building Monday.

At a news conference Monday, a general from the country's ruling military council said an investigation was under way to find who set the building on fire. State television aired images of men in plainclothes burning the building and dancing around the fire Saturday afternoon. Protesters also took advantage of the fire, using the institute's grounds to hurl firebombs and rocks at soldiers atop surrounding buildings.

A military colonel, helping out with rescue efforts at the library, said about 10 soldiers have been tasked with assisting the volunteers. He asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak to reporters.

Volunteer Ahmed el-Bindari said the military shoulders the brunt of responsibility for using its roof as a position to attack protesters before the fire erupted.

"When the government wants to protect something, they do," el-Bindari said. "Try to reach the Interior Ministry or Defense Ministry buildings. You won't be able to."

After this, the mixture runs towards the back of the car in the boot, where 2 filters filter the mixture. The two filters are, cyclone filter that removes any unwanted solid particle, and loft insulating filter that prevents tar to enter in. Finally, the clean gas is fed to the engines in front of the car, in order to burn and produce power. This technique is environment friendly and saves on a lot of fuel consumption. This trend of modification is going on since past many years. The American cars with large engines modified for linear speed were called 'hot rods' whereas the ones modified for styling with video games' ideas were called "street rods." Generally it has been the Customizers versus the Rodders where Rodders are increasingly winning in this cool and trendy generation.

The design of this building is largely inspired by Brazilian Capoeira dance and the Berimbau, an ancient Brazilian musical instrument. This spherical building has 5 levels. The lower level is meant for recreational activities, while the second and third level has a gazebo and shops respectively. The fourth level has space for offices, while the fifth and top most level has a large conference room equipped with all modern amenities. The building is sustainable because all its components are recoverable, recycled and reused. The bioclimatic characteristics of this building reduce its energy consumption as well. This building tower features a heated greenhouse and a geothermal heat pump.

The Inspiration:

A team of architects has finalized the design of Berimbau Tower. This sustainable structure will be a major center of attraction during the football World Cup in 2014 and Olympic Games in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. A look at the sphere-shaped structure shows that the team was inspired by Brazilian Capoeira dance and one of the oldest Brazilian musical instrument- the Berimbau. This 5 level building is suspended in the air. This building is sustainable and eco-friendly because it is made of recycled and reused products. A greenhouse and a geothermal heat pump maintain the heating of this house. Laminated glass curve on the outer skin of this tower gives it the spherical shape.

Eco Credentials:

The Berimbau Tower is completely sustainable as it uses natural resources for several useful activities. The tower used sun to generate hot water and keeps all offices in the building well lighted.
